This examination is performed when the Pap test is abnormal, when there are lesions or inflammation on the cervix, as well as after treatment for cervical cancer. During the procedure, the doctor may take small biopsies in order to confirm the extent of the lesion. After the biopsy, sexual intercourse, as well as the use of gels and tampons, should be avoided for 48 hours. It is also important to note that colposcopy can be performed during pregnancy.
