What is Fertilization?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Fertilization is the natural process by which the sperm unites with the egg<\/strong>, creating the first cell of the new organism \u2013 the embryo.
During this union, the genetic material from the mother and father combines<\/strong>:<\/p>

  • 23 chromosomes from the egg<\/p><\/li>

  • 23 chromosomes from the sperm
    combine, forming the 46 chromosomes<\/strong> of the future embryo.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    How is fertilization done in the laboratory?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    After egg retrieval, the eggs are prepared in the laboratory and placed in a specially controlled environment<\/strong> (ovens) that reproduces the conditions of the female body.<\/p>

    Depending on the characteristics of the sperm and the couple's history, one of two methods is chosen:<\/p>

    1) Classic IVF<\/strong><\/h4>

    The eggs are placed in a culture medium along with the appropriately treated sperm.
    The sperm enters the egg naturally<\/strong>, and fertilization is completed within 16\u201320 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>

    2) Microfertilization (ICSI)<\/strong><\/h4>

    In cases where the natural penetration of the sperm into the egg is more difficult, a healthy sperm is directly injected into the egg<\/strong> using a microneedle.
    This method bypasses mechanical or functional obstacles and allows fertilization even in very demanding conditions.<\/p>

    When is ICSI recommended?<\/strong><\/h3>

    The microfertilization method is indicated in cases such as:<\/p>

    • Oligospermia<\/strong> (low sperm count)<\/p><\/li>

    • Asthenospermia<\/strong> (low sperm motility)<\/p><\/li>

    • Teratospermia<\/strong> (increased morphological abnormalities in sperm)<\/p><\/li>

    • Surgical sperm retrieval (TESE \/ PESA)<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    • Previous fertilization failure in an IVF cycle<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    • Unexplained infertility<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    • Using a small or frozen semen sample<\/strong><\/p><\/li>
